As terrorist attacks grow more and more frequent and the world tries to decide if it is able to unite against ISIS or if there are too many other conflicting issues to be addressed, what action each party would take in regards to a terrorist threat grows increasingly important. Americans want to know that there is a plan of action, and that it’s one they can stand behind. Republicans believe in taking strong and quick action in response to terrorist attacks. While they don’t seek war out, they believe that there are circumstances in which force speaks louder than diplomacy, and that we need to strike in these situations. They believe in limiting the production of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in order to prevent terrorist attacks by such means. Now that terrorists have declared war on the U.S., Republicans also believe in taking a more offensive front and battling them in their homes before they strike again in ours.
Republicans and Weapons of Mass Destruction
Republicans believe that the production of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction needs to be halted, especially by Iran. A former party platform stated, “On 9/11, we saw the cruelty of the terrorists, and we glimpsed the future they intend for us. They intend to strike the United States to the limits of their power. They seek weapons of mass destruction to kill Americans on an even greater scale. This danger is increased when outlaw regimes build or acquire weapons of mass destruction and maintain ties to terrorist groups.” For this reason, they ask Iran to stop production of nuclear weapons, stating, “Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons capability threatens America, Israel, and the world. That threat has only become worse during the current Administration. A continuation of its failed engagement policy with Iran will lead to nuclear cascade. In solidarity with the international community, America must lead the effort to prevent Iran from building and possessing nuclear weapons capability.”
Fight Terrorists Offensively
Republicans believe that we need to attack terrorists on their own soil, in order to prevent them attacking us on ours. The only way to keep the peace, they believe, is “taking the fight to the enemy.” They hope to disrupt the leadership and organization of terrorist groups through “sudden raids, disrupting their planning and financing, and keeping them on the run.” The goal of this is to reduce the amount of space that these groups have to operate and organize. Keeping terrorist groups on the run prevents them from growing and from expanding their threat to America and to the world. They believe that the Obama administration responded too timidly to attacks, and that they “responded with weakness to some of the gravest threats to our national security this country has faced, including the proliferation of transnational terrorism, continued belligerence by a nuclear-armed North Korea, an Iran in pursuit of nuclear weapons, rising Chinese hegemony in the Asia Pacific region, Russian activism, and threats from cyber espionage and terrorism.” They believe that in times of crisis such as these, the defense budget should be raised, and preparation to make offensive attacks should be made.
No Negotiations
No conversations or negotiations are possible with terrorists, according to Republican beliefs. Nothing will change the ways of terrorists, so harshness is our only option. Republicans believe in stamping out terrorism and promoting peace and democracy across the world, stating “Only total & complete destruction of terrorism will allow freedom to flourish. We will extend the peace by supporting the rise of democracy, and the hope and progress that democracy brings, as the alternative to hatred and terror in the Middle East. In democratic societies, people do not swear allegiance to malcontents and murderers; they turn their hearts and labor to building better lives.”
Take Preemptive Precautions Against Bioterrorism
Republicans believe in preparing heavily for defense against a bioterrorism attack. The Republican Party wishes to see the bioterrorism budget expanded, the bioterror research expanded, the size of the Strategic National Stockpile of vaccines and countermeasures increased and the development of new vaccines and countermeasures.
Donald Trump on Terrorism
Donald Trump has taken the Republican concept of offensive action against terrorists to a whole new level, and has faced much scrutiny for the intensity of his views. He has stated that he believes the best way to fight ISIS is to focus on killing the families of terrorists. When asked how he would face ISIS while minimizing civilian casualties, he responded with, “When you get these terrorists, you have to take out their families. They care about their lives, don’t kid yourself. When they say they don’t care about their lives, you have to take out their families.” He criticized the U.S. for focusing on fighting a politically correct war this far, and says that he would “kick the hell out of ISIS.”
